Planned Giving
Charitable Remainder Trust A charitable remainder trust is an excellent opportunity for individuals to make a gift today that allows for a lifetime of income for the donor and his or her family, while ultimately allowing a significant gift to be made to a charitable organization. A charitable trust provides a reserve of cash flow from the trust that, upon the deaths of the creator and beneficiaries, transfers over for distribution to a designated charity. There are many options available to develop and manage a charitable remainder trust. Donors can receive a fixed income for life or a specified term. Whatever arrangement you chose, there are several financial benefits that make this an excellent vehicle for charitable giving. Benefits of a Charitable Remainder Trust: deferral of capital gains liability on appreciated assets that are contributed to a charitable remainder trust charitable income tax deduction in the year the gift is made, with an additional five years to carry over any unused deduction income for life or any other terms for up to 20 years for the donor and/or designated beneficiaries a reduced estate tax liability as assets are removed from a donor’s estate a significant donation to a worthwhile charitable organization, such as The Watson Institute.
Retirement Assets By naming The Watson Institute as a beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, you could be lowering (or eliminating) the amount of tax levied against your estate (because they are designated to a qualifying charity, the value of your retirement assets are not included in your taxable estate), as well as avoiding income tax liability for individuals if they are named as heirs and receive a distribution of your retirement assets.
